Calculate Throw Distance

Select your projector model or enter custom throw ratio to calculate optimal placement.

How to Use This Calculator

Follow these simple steps to find the perfect projector placement for your space.

๐Ÿ“ Understanding Throw Ratio

Throw ratio determines how far a projector needs to be from the screen to produce a specific image size.

  • Ultra Short Throw (UST): 0.1 – 0.3:1 โ€” Place very close to screen (inches away)
  • Short Throw: 0.4 – 1.0:1 โ€” Ideal for small to medium rooms
  • Standard Throw: 1.1 – 2.0:1 โ€” Most common, suitable for living rooms
  • Long Throw: 2.0+:1 โ€” Requires significant distance, best for large venues
Formula:
Distance (inches) = Screen Size (diagonal in inches) ร— Throw Ratio รท 1.13

๐Ÿ“ How to Measure

  • Measure from the lens of the projector to the screen surface
  • Screen size is always measured diagonally (corner to corner)
  • Ensure measurements are in a straight line (not following ceiling/floor)
  • For ceiling-mounted projectors, measure the horizontal distance

๐Ÿ” Optical Zoom Explained

Some projectors (like XGIMI HORIZON series) feature optical zoom, which allows you to:

  • Adjust screen size without moving the projector
  • Fine-tune placement within a distance range
  • Maintain image quality (unlike digital zoom)

โš ๏ธ Important Considerations

  • Room Lighting: Darker rooms allow better image quality at larger sizes
  • Screen Material: Dedicated projection screens improve brightness and contrast
  • Keystone Correction: Can adjust image angle, but reduces quality โ€” better to mount properly
  • Ceiling Height: Ensure adequate clearance for ceiling mounts
  • Cable Management: Plan for power and HDMI cable routing

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tips

  • Add 10-15% buffer to calculated distance for installation flexibility
  • Test projection before permanent mounting using temporary placement
  • Consider viewing distance: 1.5-2.5ร— screen width is optimal for 4K content
  • UST projectors work best with ambient light rejecting (ALR) screens
